Pioneers and Innovators in the Field of Composite Materials

The University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials is seeking nominations of individuals for the 2025 Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials.

The Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials recognizes pioneers and innovators in composite materials who have made significant contributions to the composites field through leadership, scholarly and education endeavors, inventions and/or economic enterprises over a sustained period of years.

The Medal of Excellence in Composite Materials has been awarded since 1984. Recipients receive a bronze medal designed by Charles Parks, a sculptor of international reputation. The medal includes the names and likenesses of the inaugural winners who are world-renowned pioneers in composites: Tsuyoshi Hayashi, National Academy of Engineering; Anthony Kelly, National Academy of Engineering; Zvi Hashin, National Academy of Engineering; Stephen Tsai, National Academy of Engineering.

The Honors Committee of the Center for Composite Materials will compile the results and consult with all past Medal winners for the final selection.

The Honors Committee includes:

  • Srikanth Pilla, Director Center for Composite Materials, Professor Mechanical Engineering, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, and founding Director of AIM for Composites DOE-Energy Frontier Research Center, University of Delaware
  • Suresh G. Advani, G. W. Laird Professor, Mechanical Engineering, University of Delaware
  • Ignaas Verpoest, Emeritus Professor, Department of Materials Engineering (MTM), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven
  • Michael Wisnom, Professor of Aerospace Structures, School of Civil, Aerospace and Design Engineering, University of Bristol

Please submit nomination packets to Corinne Hamed by December 31, 2024 that includes:

  • Nomination letter
  • Biographical sketch or resume
  • (Optional) Supporting recommendation letters highlighting the nominee’s contributions to and impact on the field of composite materials

The medal will be awarded in conjunction with the 24th International Conference on Composite Materials (ICCM24) awards ceremony on August 7, 2025, organized by the University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials.
